Description
The Stoltzfus String Bean was thought to be extinct until some dry beans were found in the 2000's in a jar of mix beans by the head farmer of Happy Cat Farms, which had been saved by his grandfather David Haas. The seeds pictured here were grown out for seed saving in the Raíces EcoCulture garden.
From Happy Cat Farms:
"Stoltzfus String Bean introduced around 1888, it was selected by Beachy Amish from a bean called 'Early Refugee.' This is a very old bean and written about in Pennsylvania colonial gardens as early as 1723. "
