Description

Flyer for Raíces Cultural Center Dance and Drum Workshop “BOMBA: A Cooling Down”

EVENT DESCRIPTION
Join us to move and groove to the live Caribbean drums. Beginning in March 2012, Raíces Cultural Center will be offering dance and drum workshops the first Saturday of every month. Each month we will introduce a different Caribbean tradition, exploring the history and culture through film clips and discussion, learning basic dance movements, rhythmic patterns, songs and chants and ending in a drum and dance social celebration.

3/3/12-BOMBA: A Cooling Down
Bomba is thought to have derived from West African and/or Congolese slaves who were brought to Puerto Rico. “Bomba” means “a cooling down", as it was the tradition practiced by these slaves and their ancestors on their one day off in the week, Sunday. This was their one day of free time and they used it to gather, drum, dance, sing and practice their own cultural traditions. Join us to learn more and to dance, play and sing the Afro-Puertorican bomba.
