Description
Freshly planted plots at Finca Mi Casa in Camuy, Puerto Rico. All seeds planted on the farm are open pollinated so they are suitable for seed saving. Don Luis Soto, the owner of Finca Mi Casa is an expert seed saver on the island of Puerto Rico. Many of the varieties he plants are heirloom and saved over several plantings to adapt to the islands growing conditions. Seeds are saved, replanted and shared with other growers throughout the island as well as visitors from abroad. The plots pictured here were planted in January 2018, just over three months after Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico, including a large majority of the islands agricultural crops. The importance of small scale, sustainable, organic and resilient farming methods, andancestral practices like seed saving and sharing was highlighted in the aftermath of the storm and during the long recovery and rebuilding period that followed and continues to this day.
