In Nigeria, the orisha Yemayá was originally a river, but in the evolution on the island of Cuba, during and after the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Yemayá became known as of the orisha of the ocean, or salt water. Yemayá is also associated with motherhood and is the mother of all orishas. A local Girl Scout troop participated in the festival, attending all the workshops, including the bomba workshop pictured here, earning badges in arts and community involvement.
